If you require faster transfer speeds than what's offered by HDDs, you'll need an SSD like this. I appreciate the feedback but if you aren't willing to get explicitly compatible drives I don't recommend buying the unit.Synology has a range of SSDs available that are specifically designed for NAS use. #Synology drive compatibility serial#Both unverified and incompatible drives will not be able to display bad sector count, temperature, serial number, and other SMART fields. Unverified models can be used but will display a warning while they are in the NAS. Yes, the functionality is different from the way older models work. I like the simplicity and small form factor of the 12 bay unit, but there is simply no way I would ever buy a Synology product that restricts my use of the vast, vast majority of hard drives on Earth. #Synology drive compatibility upgrade#Sorry if I am being too explicit/detailed in my questions, but I was really hoping to upgrade to this model. I just want to confirm, is that exactly what the new model is doing? Essentially vendor-locking basic drive functionality like temperature reporting to Synology drives only? It sounds like for this new model, which I was hoping to buy, I would be unable to use a drive like this at all – and for other drives such as Western Digital Red Pro/Red Plus, I would be unable to view even basic information like the drive temperature even though that has never been the case before on any DS models. That drive is listed as an incompatible drive on the DS1813 compatibility page but I never would have known – there are no errors or warnings, the drive is part of a storage pool, the SMART info displays correctly, the SMART tests seem to run fine and display a Normal status for both quick and extended tests. It has a single ST8000AS0002 mixed in to an 8-drive storage pool (it is only used for data mirroring via rsync so the bad performance doesn’t matter to me). #Synology drive compatibility update#Is the functionality you describe different from the way older models work? For example, right now I have a DS1813 running DSM 6.1.7-15284 update 3. ![]() Therefore, it's recommended to use drives that are on the compatibility list for that specific model. In the event of drive related issues we cannot give assistance for unverified or incompatible drives. We cannot provide any information about how a specific drive model will behave if it is not on the compatibility/incompatible page. These drives can be used but will display a warning while they are in the NAS.īoth unverified and incompatible drives will not be able to display bad sector count, temperature, serial number, and other SMART fields. If a drive is not listed in either the compatible or incompatible section then it is considered unverified. You can click on "Incompatible Models" to see a list of drives that we tested but did not meet our standards.ĭrives listed on the incompatible list for a NAS will not be able to be used in that NAS in any way unless migrated from another Synology NAS. You can find out what drives are compatible with a specific NAS by clicking here. Hard to believe they would try and lock it to their own drives but I've certainly seen crazier things.Įdit: for whatever it's worth, here is the response from customer service I received. ![]() ![]() Now that the unit is actually in-stock at some online stores, has anyone seen or heard anything new since the announcement? There is a new 4TB drive in their online drive compatibility list so I guess that's promising. Since then, basically no new information at all has come out about this issue. It was announced 6 weeks ago and there were some questions about whether Synology would try and lock it to Synology-only hard drives. I've been waiting for a new 12 bay model for quite a while and was hoping to buy the 2422 when it came out. ![]()
